Even the most practical baby gifts are adorable; is there anything more precious than a bright yellow rubber ducky or a super soft washcloth? Bath time is not just for cleaning: a warm bath can soothe a fussy child, help get him warm and cuddly for bedtime, or give him some time to play, explore, and discover the wonder and thrill of splashing mom and dad. You can ensure parents are well-equipped for tub time with a baby bath gift basket.

You can purchase baby bath time baskets or you can build your own customized basket to fit your budget. Some items to include:

Bath Time Essentials

Baby shampoo and wash. One skill parents learn quickly is how to handle 10 pounds of slippery baby quickly. You have a small timeframe to get your washing done, so you have to be fast! This is why many shampoos are also washes. Try Johnson & Johnson, Aveeno, Burt’s Bees, or Baby Magic, which are formulated specifically for baby’s skin.

Lotion. This helps preserve that delicious new baby smell and keep skin soft! Again, opt for those that are specially formulated for babies.

Baby oil. This can help keep skin smooth and soft, but parents can also use it to treat “cradle cap.”

Wash cloths. Include three or four. Often, parents like to put one on the bottom of the bath surface to help keep baby in place more securely, and when dealing with wash cloths and bibs, more is better.

Hooded bath towel. You can certainly include a regular bath towel, but the hooded ones are too cute to resist and are just the right size.

Grooming supplies. Include small nail clippers, a comb, and a brush.

Booties.

PJs for post-bath cozy time.

Bath books.

Rubber duckies! This is the best part, and you’re not limited to ducks. Today, you can find bath squirters in virtually any color or style, from boats and trucks to dinosaurs and Bert and Ernie.

Bath stickers. As baby grows and spends more time in the tub, he’ll love playing with these fun stickers. When wet, they adhere to the side of the tub or tile and the child can set up farm scenes, roads with trucks, or beach fun, depending on the set of stickers he has.

If you have a bit of room left over, include bath soak, body wash, and relaxing lotion for tired moms and dads!

Sometimes, the best gift baskets are not baskets at all. When giving your bath time basket, consider using an alternative container. It can help spice up your presentation and create an even more useful gift. Some ideas:

A galvanized tub. These are a cute addition to the bathroom, and parents can use it to store baby’s bath items.

A bath toy holder. These useful items catch and hold bath toys so they can dry properly. Fill one with your bath items for a thoughtful gift.

A baby bathtub. Babies’ small size and lack of muscle means that bathing in the regular tub is out for a few months. A baby tub is perfectly sized and shaped for these little bathers and features a non-slip mat on the bottom.

Plastic beach tote. This makes a great container for the initial gift, as well as for toys, trips to the beach, and just about anything parents can think of.

When you give a bath time gift basket, you can be sure that your gift will be used and appreciated. Whether you choose a premade basket, or assemble your own with hand-picked items, it will all make bath time a bit more pleasant and relaxing for everyone.

Playtime!

Freeze dance. Put on your toddler’s favorite upbeat music and start the dancing. Turn off the music at random intervals. Your child (and you!) have to freeze in whatever position you are in until the music comes back on. This works well if you have multiple children or are hosting a play date or children’s party.

Go to the park or playground. If you have a community one nearby, take advantage! If not, check out local schools and see what their playgrounds are like. Let your child run, climb, swing, and play to her heart’s content. Take the time to swing with her and take a few trips down the slide. Your toddler will love it.

Get some sidewalk chalk and let out your inner artist. You’ll find that you like this activity, too!

Play dress up. Get old Halloween costumes, plastic jewelry, dresses, wedding tiaras, hats, etc., and let your child dress up. This is great for boys and girls, and they can put on a little show if they want.

Make a movie. Every toddler loves to be the star. Fortunately with video on everything from iPods to cell phones, this is easy. Film your child singing a song, dancing, doing a trick, or just being silly. The best part will be watching it!

Bake something together. Let your child be your “assistant” and dump the ingredients into the mixing bowl. If you make cookies, your toddler can help you make shapes or decorate them with sprinkles.

Have a picnic. Doesn’t the same old lunch taste better outside? Bring your sandwiches and apples outside, spread out a blanket, and enjoy the sun. Don't forget a little treat like fun animal cookies to make it extra-special. If it’s raining, there’s no reason to delay your picnic. Have it inside on the living room floor. Toddlers thrive on routine, but these little departures are a lot of fun for them.

Take a trip to the library. If your library has a great children’s room, this is a wonderful resources for those long afternoons when you need something to do! Children love to go somewhere, and here, they can play, read, look at books, and do activities. You don’t even have to shush them.

Look at picture books together. Kids love to look at pictures of themselves! Take out your toddler’s baby books and stroll down memory lane together.

Paint. Spread out a piece of plastic or a tarp on the floor and get busy.

Do some chores. Toddlers love to help their parents, so seize the opportunity. Have them help you sort clothes (Mom’s go in this pile, yours go in this pile…etc.), rake a pile of leaves (expect much of this “help” to be counterproductive!), carry firewood, water the garden, walk to the store, or whatever you need to do. Make it fun, and your toddler will think playtime lasts all day every day.

Do something outside; if you can, go hiking, go to the beach or park, or take advantage of some other natural amenity in your area.

Put a tent in the living room and have a little camping trip. Whether for nap time or overnight, your toddler will love this mini-vacation.

Make a pine cone bird feeder (spread peanut butter on a large pine cone and roll it in birdfeed or sunflower seeds). Hang it up outside and do some bird watching.

Get some window crayons and do some interior decorating on your glass. Children can adorn their bedroom windows with fun pictures.

The special thing about toddlers is that they think most anything is fun; they have terrific attitudes, and all they need is a parent/babysitter/relative/etc. who is willing to let them explore, discover, play, and be themselves.

A baby brings out the generosity in people; at showers, expectant parents are often overwhelmed at the incredible baby shower gifts that friends and family offer to them and to the new addition. From receiving baby blankets and crib sheets, onesies and bibs, to toys and books, showers are wonderful ways to give couples what they need to start their new baby’s life. While people love shopping for babies and expect nothing other than for you to enjoy the gifts, it is always a great idea to thank them for their generosity and thought. Here are some tips for writing baby shower thank you cards.

As guests arrive at your baby shower, ask that they print their names and addresses in a guest book. This can be a simple sheet of paper or a more decorative book that you can then add pictures to for a scrapbook. Whatever you choose, this will give you the guests’ addresses for your thank you notes. Next, enlist the help of your mother, sister, or best friend. It will be her (or his, we’re not sexist!) job to write down which guest gave which gift. In the excitement of opening all those gifts, it can be difficult to remember which gift goes with which guest. This is important, though, so you can reference the gift in the card.

Now, we know expectant mothers and couples are very busy trying to get ready for the little one; but remember, your guests took time out of their busy lives to shop and attend your shower. Thanking them personally is the best option, even if it does take a little longer.

Always handwrite your cards so they are personal.

Do not use a fill-in-the-blank card or a card with a prewritten message. No one likes to get a card with nothing but your signature. It is very impersonal and does not convey your gratitude.

Always write a few lines about the gift, how you plan to use it, etc. Your baby shower guest/gift list will be invaluable here.

Send the notes as promptly as you can; once the baby comes, you won’t have as much time to write them. If you can, make them out the day of your shower – while everything is fresh in your mind!

If you need help, have your partner or a friend address the envelopes for you and ask them to stop by the post office to mail them. But do not make your baby shower guests fill out their own return envelope. As etiquette experts say, that’s just tacky!

Your wording can certainly be your own; as long as you convey your thanks and appreciation, it does not matter if you are a natural poet or not. The following example is simple, direct, but loving:

Dear Tami,

What an amazing blanket! I know it was a lot of work, but I love it and I know the baby will too! Thank you so much for the beautiful, thoughtful gift.

Here, you are commending this person not only on their blanket-crafting skills, but on their thoughtfulness and style. It won’t take you long to write those few lines, but it will mean so much to the giver.

Another example:

Dear Janet,

Thank you so much for the gorgeous outfit! I fell in love with it, and we have it packed in our bag so we can take our new little girl home from the hospital in style!

It will make the giver feel great that her gift has such a place of honor. Even if it doesn’t, you can still write something like, “I can’t wait to put this on the baby!” or “Just when I thought baby clothes couldn’t get any cuter!”

Baby shower thank you cards are a tiny way to show your appreciation; they will take a little time to fill in, but, in many ways, this is your gift to your guests.

When you are pregnant, it seems like the celebrating begins right away. You start planning, making lists, and thinking about how to get ready for the bundle of joy that is going to be in your arms just months from now. Your friends and family are almost as excited as you are. A shower is a great way to share the happiness – and score some excellent baby shower gifts for your child! When is the best time to have a baby shower?

Timing is Everything

Baby showers are traditionally held one or two months before the mother’s due date. Why? There are a few reasons for this:

You don’t want to wait too long because mommy may go into labor early.

If the mother receives duplicates of gifts or needs to exchange things, she has ample time to do so.

People are incredibly generous at baby showers; it takes time to sort through the gifts, set everything up, and wash clothing. Having a month or two is important so the expectant mother can “nest” without rushing.

By eight months, she doesn’t care if she looks ridiculous so you can make her wear one of those hats made of gift wraps and bows.

Now, why not go earlier to give her even more time? Many women do not announce their pregnancies until after their first trimester. After the first three months, the chance of miscarriage declines dramatically (it is about 10 percent after that), so expectant parents feel more comfortable sharing their news. Then they may wait until they know the sex of the baby so they don’t end up with all things yellow and green. Usually, people wait until at least after the sixth month.

There is certainly something to be said for having it in the 6th or 7th month; many pregnant women feel much more comfortable during this stage of the pregnancy. They may be more open to a good party!

Tradition does not have as strong a hold on today’s expectant mothers as it once did. Many women are putting off their showers until after the baby is born. This is like a little “coming out party” for the baby, so friends and family can meet him/her. Some women opt for “Sip and See” showers because they have no family where they live, while others do so because of their religious beliefs. Still others hate the idea of having their newborn passed around to multiple (sick, germy, shaky, and/or weak) hands. It depends entirely on your preference and your comfort level whether you have your shower before or after. Also, there are plenty more fun baby shower themes out there so do your homework beforehand!

If you do choose to have the baby be the guest of honor at the shower, plan on waiting 6 to 8 weeks after the baby is born. The first weeks really should be about mom, dad, and baby bonding, not Great Aunt Selma pinching your child’s cheeks. Waiting also helps you determine what gifts would be most useful and appreciated.

Another factor to consider is if the expectant mother is going to be having multiple showers. Many people do: you have one with close friends, one with coworkers at the office, one with your book club or church club, etc. Make sure that these are spaced a few weeks apart. If that’s not possible, certainly don’t have more than one in a weekend. It can easily get overwhelming; so many people, so many gifts, so many questions, so many repetitions of “I’m due on…”

A few more questions:

Should there be a shower when the baby is not the first? Traditionally, showers have been reserved for the first child of a woman or couple. Today, more and more people are having them for their second and third children (and beyond) as well. Every baby is special, and if people want to give you gifts, enjoy!

Should an adopted baby get a baby shower? Absolutely. They are every bit as loved as biological children, and every bit in need of cute outfits, onesies, and toys. If the child is older, a shower could take on the form of a party with gifts appropriate for his/her age.

A baby shower is a wonderful way to celebrate and welcome a child. The “when” doesn’t matter as much as the people gathered to support the parents.

He’s relying on you for his nutrients; in that way, you really are eating for two! Many women say, “Well, I’m going to gain weight anyway; I may as well skip the veggies and go right for the baby cookies.” It doesn’t quite work that way. Your baby needs vitamins and minerals, not sugar! Plus, gaining too much weight can be harmful to your health and that of the baby. So eating right is important – but how do you do it?

First, know how many calories you need to shoot for. During the first trimester, you do not need to increase your calorie intake at all. In fact, this is one of the miracles of being a mom: you produce a hormone called HCG, which nourishes the egg. This is important, especially if you cannot keep food down because of morning sickness. The baby still gets the nutrients he needs, even if you are lacking a little at that time.

During the second trimester, you can add more calories to your daily diet. An average woman will need to add between 300 and 500 calories. No, let’s amend that: an average woman will need to add between 300 and 500 high quality calories.

Here are some excellent, nutrient-rich choices for a healthy mom and baby:

Fruits and vegetables. Many women have low iron during pregnancy, so eating greens like kale and spinach is a great way to boost it without having to take another pill. Make sure to wash all produce thoroughly. Especially good for you are: broccoli, avocado, spinach, kale, red pepper, edamame, and mangoes. These foods pack a nutritious punch. Like they say: eat a rainbow!

Lentils. Whether you make soup or serve a lentil salad, you will be getting protein, iron, vitamin B6, and folic acid with every bite. Experiment with flavors and taste the versatility of this bean.

Oatmeal. Your breakfast bowl will be filled with iron, B vitamins, and fiber. You can have it as a cereal in the morning (or whenever you need a snack!) or sprinkle oats in other foods, such as meatloaf, cookies, muffins, and more.

Yogurt. Calcium, folic acid, protein, and yumminess; yogurt has it all. It makes a great snack and you can vary it by adding toppings like fruit or granola. You can also switch sour cream and mayo for yogurt in many recipes. The benefit is that if you are running late for work, need a snack on the way home, or forgot to pack some munchies for after the gym, you can grab yogurt at any grocery or convenience store.

These are just a few suggestions; in pregnancy, as the rest of the time, it is all about better choices. Instead of reaching for a candy bar, go for a small package of nuts. Instead of eating a bowl of cream soup before dinner, have veggie soup or a salad.

Many foods are harmful for pregnant women and developing fetuses. These include:

First and foremost, no alcohol. No beer, no drinking wine gifts, nothing.

Fish with mercury, fish exposed to industrial pollutants, raw shellfish, and smoked seafood should be avoided. Run away from these heavy metals, seaborne illnesses, and the bacteria, Listeria.

Soft cheeses. Not the cheese! Brie, feta, gorgonzola camembert, and Mexican-style cheeses are made with unpasteurized milk, which means they may contain Listeria. This bacteria increases the chance of miscarriage and can infect the baby. If the cheese is made with pasteurized milk, go ahead – but limit calorie-dense choices!

Deli meats. Listeria rears its ugly head again, this time in our sliced ham, roast beef, and turkey. While you’re at it, stay away from pate, which can also contain Listeria.

Caffeine. A cup of coffee, if you absolutely have to, is probably fine. But more than that increases your risk of miscarriage and it could contribute to low birth weight, premature birth, and/or withdrawal symptoms at birth. In addition, it can leach necessary calcium and fluids from your body.

Go to FoodSafety.gov to see a complete list of foods to avoid when you are pregnant. You may have to give up sushi and brie for a few months, but a healthy baby is well worth it.

If you are giving a sports baby shower you want the games to be sports themed as well. Here are some great games to play at a baby shower.

Sports trivia game – you can search online for the most famous people in the sport that the mommy-to-be likes the most. Have a place at the shower to host the game. You can have four players on each side and you stand in the middle asking the questions. You will need a chalkboard or white board to help you keep track of the points. The team who answers the most questions correctly wins. You can find several trivia games online to use if you have trouble finding the questions your self.

If you can have your baby shower outdoors then you can have a football toss. Set up the back yard with hula-hoops that can hang from a large branch of a tree. Draw a line that players will toss from. Have each guest toss the balls aiming through the hoops. The person who successfully makes it through the hoops wins the prize.

Volleyball with a water balloon can be fun for everyone who participates. If you want to have a barrel of laughs at your sports themed baby shower then try the game of volleyball with a water balloon. To begin, you will need two different teams on each side of the net. Choose two players on each team to hold up a beach towel. Place a water balloon on the towel of the team who will go first. Have that team toss the water balloon over the net using their towel and aim for the balloon to land in the opponents towel. The team that does not pop their balloon wins the prize.

Basketball indoors or outdoors – Buy or find a Fisher Price indoor basketball hoop. You can give this to the mommy when the baby shower is over. Divide guests into two teams. Have each team player throw the ball and aim for the basket for a total of one minute. Count every basket they make. The winning team is determined by the team who has the largest number of baskets made.

Party favors can vary so look for sports themed baby shower favors to pass out. You can buy bottles of bubbles that have a basketball or soccer theme to them. These can be found in the kids aisle of any store and do not cost a lot. You can purchase sports ball shaped bubble gum dispenser as well.

You can also play traditional baby shower games as well. Sports themed baby shower games can get expensive if you are not careful so make sure that you determine your budget before you begin. Sticking to a budget will help you successfully create a baby shower that you know she will love and will remember forever.

Everyone who attended the sports themed baby shower will walk away with many good memories and the mommy-to-be will be so happy that you took the time throw her a baby shower that means a lot to her.

If so, why not wow them with a jungle baby shower theme.

There are so many different ways that you can create a jungle theme from the decorations to the food and drink.

The most common baby shower food consists of cake, cookies, chips, peanuts, and mints. There is usually punch served at the baby shower too. If you are going to use a jungle theme, you can be a little more creative in the shapes and the foods that you choose.

Here is a common list of baby shower foods and how you can make them into animal shapes to serve your guests.

Turn boring cookies into jungle animals

Instead of buying or making a traditional round cookie, you can make the cookies with animal shapes. Monkeys, hippos, lions, tigers, and zebras are the most common jungle themed animals and you can purchase these animals cookie cutters online. You can make a simple peanut better cookie or sugar cookie in animal shapes. Decorate the cookies with an animal face to give it a realistic look. If you don’t have time to bake the cookies and make the animal shapes then buy the shaped animal cookies at almost any store.

Sandwiches and more

Depending on what time your party is, you may want to serve finger sandwiches. Use your animal cookie cutters to create animal shaped finger sandwiches. You can also do animal shaped Jello in different colors.

Desserts

You will need desserts for your party and there are several ways to incorporate the jungle theme into the food. Monkeys love bananas and so does your guests. Make frozen banana pops by taking a banana and placing it on a stick. Dip the banana into chocolate and then roll it in nuts. Buy some Styrofoam to poke holes into so you can stand up the banana popsicles while they harden in the freezer.

Trail mix is always a good food to serve at any party. You can rename it “Monkey Mix” so it will match with the theme. Add dried banana chips, coconut, peanuts, raisins, and sunflower seeds to a large bowl and mix it together.

No baby shower would be complete without a cake. You need to have a jungle themed cake as well. You can have the cake professionally made or you can make it yourself by finding a customized jungle themed cake pan. Bake the cake a day ahead of time so you have time to make another one if it doesn’t turn out right.

How you organize the food also affects how people feel about it. You want to create a jungle theme so to do that you can cut several leaves out of green construction paper. These leaves need to be rather large in size but you can have several different sizes to make it look authentic. Place the leaves all over the table. Display the animal crackers and cookies in the middle of the table and everything else around it.

With a few clever additions and creativity, you'll have pulled off a wonderful baby shower theme that even the pickiest guest will enjoy.

Bulldogs.

Believe it or not, these are ideal pets for kids. Their short, sturdy build makes them a terrific match for any toddler who loves to climb, push, pull, and prod the dog. Bulldogs do not tend to be excitable, another very important quality to look for. They are typically not high energy and have a short coat of hair so they will not be terribly high-maintenance. If you barely have time to bathe and play with your own kids, this dog won't add to your burden! Bulldogs are generally obedient, gentle, and friendly to kids and other pets. Plus, who can resist that wrinkly face?

Collies.

Though they require more grooming, and you will likely have more dog hair adhering to your clothing, collies are a great fit for families. They are gentle and can be easily trained. They tend to be protective of their owners, and owners' children. One caution: they may try to herd your family! If you curb this behavior when your collie is a pup, it will not become a nuisance.

Newfoundlands.

This is the gentle giant of the canine world. They are often referred to as “nature's babysitters” because of their wonderful, patient, and gentle demeanors. One trait common to newfies is that they think they are lap dogs. They love to hang inside and be with the family. Newfoundlands shed, require grooming, and may bump into things in small rooms – but they are lovable, protective, and loyal. This is a dog that will lie at your feet or jump into a lake to save you.

Irish setters.

If you have a lot of space and an active family, an Irish setter may be a great addition. They like to play, run, and exercise every day, so they are not ideal for busy families who are gone for long periods of time. On the other hand, if you have a yard and want to use it, this red-coated beauty is social, easy to train, and wonderful with children.

Golden retrievers.

Among the most popular of breeds, the golden retriever is also very energetic and requires exercise and space. They are great for kids because of their legendary patience, kindness, and gentleness. Retrievers are smart and have a great disposition.

Labrador retrievers.

These are also very popular, and for good reason. They are smart, loyal, gentle, patient, dependable, protective, and gorgeous! They are a bit bigger than golden retrievers, and both breeds will need brushing.

Poodles.

If anyone in your family has allergies, a poodle is a great choice. They shed very little, and they make wonderful playmates with their patience, good attitude, and love of playing.

The right dog for your family may be on this list – or it may not be. It may be a mutt. Even more important than the specific breed is the demeanor of the dog. Is he good with children? Does he mind if your toddler pulls on his fur? Do you like him? Does he like you? Your family's dream dog may be a poodle or it could be a pit bull. In any case, balance the breed’s tendencies with the dog's own qualities and behavior when making your choice, and always make sure he meets the family before you make any final decisions.

Every parent wants the best for their baby, and for many, that means opting to use cloth diapers. Why? What are the benefits? One of the biggest is expense: a typical family will save over $2,600 by using cloth over disposable. Many times, family members or friends will sneak cloth diapers into diaper cakes or diaper bags because they're firm believers and it's no wonder why!

The benefits for your child are equally important to saving money: cloth diapered babies tend to have less diaper rash and skin irritation and they will probably be potty-trained before their disposable diaper-wearing peers.

If you are hesitant to use cloth because you fear sticking your baby in the hip with a big diaper pin or you wonder if you'll be able to wrap them correctly in order to prevent leakage, don't worry. Today's cloth diapers are much more parent-friendly and easy to use.

There is no doubt about it: diapering technology has advanced. While it means drier bums, it can also mean intimidation for new parents. How do you start? Which fabric is best? Do you need liners, doublers, or both? And what in the world is an AIO or an AI2?

The first step is to learn about the different kinds of cloth diapers. This isn't your grandma's square of linen anymore; you have incredible options, including:

All in One (or AIO). This diaper includes all the parts you need, such as an inner soaker and waterproof cover. They are relatively easy to use and do not require additional supplies. Many people consider them just like disposable diapers in terms of ease – the only difference is you wash it instead of throw it away! On the con side, these take longer to dry and they can cost between $16 and $30. Remember, though, you can use the same diaper for years. BumGenius is a highly recommended brand, particularly their organic AIOs.

All in Two (or AI2). Because AIOs take so long to dry, AI2s can be a great choice. They come apart to speed up drying times. You simply fasten the soaker, or the inner absorbent part of the diaper, to the outer cover.

The downside to both AIOs and AI2s is that they are quite expensive because you have to have enough on hand to last until you do washing next. Having 10 – 20 $30 diapers is a big upfront expense. But there are some other options.

Prefolds. These are the least expensive option. They look like squares of cloth but have prefold seams to help make diapering a bit easier. You fold them into a rectangle and put them inside a diaper cover (which are inexpensive and can be reused between changings). You then fasten the cover, and you are done. You can also skip the cover and fasten the cloth diaper with a Snappi. Prefolds can be used throughout your child's diapered life – and beyond. They can be used as diapers, liners, and soakers, as well as baby bibs (or mainly burp cloths) when thoroughly cleaned.

Pocket diapers. These have a waterproof outer layer and then a layer of suede cloth or microfleece inside. In between the layers, in the pocket, you can put whatever you want for lining and increase absorbency if you need to.

Fitted diapers. These have elastic and fasteners built in so you do not need snaps or Snappis. You will need a separate cover. These are like a combination of prefolds and pockets.

Most parents use a combination of these options. For instance, they may use prefolds at home and then use AIOs, AI2s, or pocket diapers for going out or when a babysitter or less experienced diaperer is watching the baby. ClothDiapersMadeEasy has a convenient chart to help you determine how many diapers you need, depending on which option(s) you choose.

The “how” is slightly different with each type of diaper. AIOs, for instance, work just like regular disposables. Prefolds are probably the most intimidating at first, but you just need to practice – and invest in a few great covers and a diaper pail with liners. You can find some great video tutorials on YouTube, like the one shown below.

The most important tip is do not be intimidated. You will soon find that it is easy to use cloth diapers, even prefolds. You may have some new parent mishaps at first, but everyone does – even those who use disposable diapers!

It’s the time when you will dedicate your baby to Christ and promise to raise him or her in a Christian tradition. You’ll also have god parents to choose who will promise to raise your children should anything happen to you and your husband, and who also will guide your child along through life.

So, who gets invited to this big day? It will depend on how you want to do it. First off, you’re going to pick two people to be god parents. These are typically the two closest members of your family—one male and one female. But it can also be anyone you choose from a close family friend to a cousin. It is considered an honor to be chosen as a god parent, so no one is likely going to turn your invitation down. Just be sure you choose someone trustworthy and who you know will be in your life forever.

The Catholic tradition baptizes babies. Other faiths have adult baptisms if they have them at all. So, it’s a cultural as well as a traditional custom used by only certain religious groups. When thinking about inviting people to the actual ceremony, consider their religion as well as their relationship to you. You want to include everyone from your immediate family as well as the people closest to you in your family. Aunts, uncles, cousins and other close family are always invited.

When it comes to your friends outside of your family, consider a few things. Will they have to travel a far distance to make it to the baptism? Will they be uncomfortable in your church if they are from another faith? Will it pose an inconvenience to them to have to make arrangements to come (are they ill or unable to travel)?

Most times it’s more a factor of how many people your event hall or home can hold rather than a person’s situation that will dictate who you invite to a baptism. For instance, if you’re having the reception at your house and only have room for 20 people, you’re going to have to start cutting some of your friends out. However, if you have a hall booked and can accommodate any number of people, go ahead and invite everyone you want. If someone is unable to travel, they can politely say no. They will usually send a baptism gift anyway even if they can’t make it.

You need to invite everyone to the actual baptism as well as the reception. The highlight of the day is seeing the baby get baptized. Many people have the event catered afterwards, but you can cook everything the night before and refrigerate it. When everyone gets to your house, just start warming things up. You can also decorate your home, and/or prepare baptism favors for your guests.

Baptisms are sometimes held on Saturday mornings so as not to interfere with the normal Sunday mass schedule. But you can ask at your church if Sunday afternoons are offered. Sometimes it’s easier to have it on a Saturday rather than a Sunday when people have to be up early for work the next day. But it will depend on when your church offers baptisms.
